Sydney Sweeney Reacted To Being Called A “MAGA Barbie”

Sydney Sweeney Reacts To MAGA Barbie Nickname, Politics

Sydney Sweeney addressed the political discourse around her…sort of.

From the American Eagle “great jeans” ad to news that she is indeed registered as a Republican in Florida, the current administration hasn’t been shy about hyping up the 28-year-old. Sydney herself has kept things pretty vague on the politics front — when asked about criticism that “white people shouldn’t joke about genetic superiority” in the current political climate, referring to her denim ad, Sydney replied, “I think that when I have an issue that I want to speak about, people will hear.”

Now, with the help of investors like Jeff Bezos, Sydney has launched a new lingerie brand called SYRN. It’s already off to a controversial start, given that she filmed herself tossing bras onto the Hollywood sign, much to the chagrin of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce.

In a new interview with Cosmopolitan, Sydney was asked what internet narrative she’d like to retire. Her response? “That I’m a hateful person.”

The actor was then asked about being called a “MAGA Barbie” while keeping her politics private. “I’ve never been here to talk about politics. I’ve always been here to make art, so this is just not a conversation I want to be at the forefront of. And I think because of that, people want to take it even further and use me as their own pawn. But it’s somebody else assigning something to me, and I can’t control that,” she replied.

When asked why she wouldn’t correct the record if things were untrue, she said, “I haven’t figured it out. I’m not a hateful person. If I say, ‘That’s not true,’ they’ll come at me like, ‘You’re just saying that to look better.’ There’s no winning. There’s never any winning. I just have to continue being who I am, because I know who I am. I can’t make everyone love me. I know what I stand for.”

As for a non-partisan belief that she has, Sydney remarked, “I’ve always led with love. I’ve always believed that love is love in every single form. You should be kind to whoever you meet. I remember on the set of Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood, I watched Brad Pitt sit and hang out with the transpo department. I absolutely loved that, and I was like, ‘Yeah, you have to respect everybody in your life.'”

“I think actions will always speak louder than words that are written, and everyone who knows me or has worked with me or has been my friend would all say the exact same thing: I’m a hard worker and I’m very kind,” she continued. “And so it is difficult when people have opinions about you that aren’t true, because you want them to know who you are. You want to correct them and be like, ‘I don’t believe in hate! I don’t stand for anything you guys are saying.'”

Well…okay! You can read the full interview with Sydney here.
