“A former roommate. They were college sweethearts who met at a stereotypical summer job where they spent every waking minute together (think camp counselor, lifeguard, etc.) Their relationship grew strained when one went to a high-powered graduate program, and one didn’t finish college.”
“I met my friend in the graduate program; they had been together for years at 25. She was driven, ambitious, had her life together, worked multiple side hustles, supported her mom through a battle with cancer, trained their puppy, decorated their apartment, etc. He was drifting aimlessly, doing a very physically demanding job, but also ‘blowing off steam’ playing video games. He was always very nice, but their relationship didn’t make a lot of sense to me, as she would always explain how she had to lead him (metaphorically kicking and screaming) to the next step, sometimes filling out job applications for him, filing his health insurance, etc.
I went to their wedding and left early after pouring wayyyyy too much of my own time and money into it without even being a bridesmaid. She was one of my first friends, married at 26, and the first to get divorced after a year. The only reason she gave was that he didn’t treat her as she deserved. What I suspect is that she wanted a partner, and he wasn’t nearly as driven or together as she was. I’ve lost touch, but really hope she’s living her best life in her 30s.”
