“And it was almost completely different. The film spent years in production hell. It was originally meant to be this grand musical epic, like The Lion King, called Kingdom of the Sun. After really poor test screenings, Disney execs split the production team in half, gave half to Roger Allers, the original director, and half to Mike Dindal, who wanted to pivot towards comedy. The studio vastly preferred the comedy version of Dindal, but still almost shut production down entirely, giving Dindal just two weeks to come up with a version that would work. That was the film we got. There’s a documentary film called The Sweatbox by Trudie Styler (wife of Sting, who was involved in the soundtrack) that covers the production of it; it’s pretty good!”
