People Are Sharing The Most Frustrating Time They Tried To Reason With Trump Supporters, And I’m EXHAUSTED

(Cont.) “My mother basically voted herself out of work as an educator with the new funding cuts, but she still doesn’t see the connection between her vote and her new situation, just like she suddenly doesn’t care how much groceries cost after claiming the grocery bills were part of the reason for her vote. They are two of the most privileged people I know, and yet they truly believe that, as Christians, they are oppressed in our society. I can’t think of another group with more reasonable freedoms, yet they fight for the freedom to subject others to their religious beliefs by force.”

“I tried to reason with them that declaring a National religion is shortsighted (e.g., what happens when religious practices are defined differently than how you practice) and that religious freedom protects us all. Agreements like this seem to only drive them to more extreme positions (with less and less proof and more dependence on feelings). 

I stopped trying to reason with them long ago for my own mental health because they are clearly out for MAGA belonging, tribal identity, and an easy relevancy in society (that they’ve become accustomed to as white middle-class Americans raised in the ’50s and ’60s). They don’t trust the next generation as far as they can throw them, which seems to be at the root of the problem, but they still claim to love me and my sibling SO MUCH — it is so bizarre, ya’ll. 

I’m still rooting for them to somehow spend the rest of their lives in a less hate-filled and fear-mongered state of mind, but my reasoning with them won’t get them there. They are lost right up until they want to be found.”
