“I didn’t know anything about HVAC. I called two different companies, and both wanted me to change the whole outside unit for more than $4K because the motor was fried.”

“I went on eBay, and looked at some numbers on the old motor that seemed like serial numbers. I found it online, opened the outside unit, took out the whole fan with the motor on it, and banged it with a hammer to detach the fan. Then, I connected the wires, color-matching them to the old ones because it seemed reasonable, put it back on, and the thing has been running for 10 more years since then. It’s a 30-year-old unit, it’s insane.”
