To be clear, the song was inspired by The Abbey, a queer bar in West Hollywood. Also, sorry, rant time: Part of what makes “Pink Pony Club” such a brilliant song is the sense of longing behind it. There’s a sadness behind the call to “keep dancing” amid the political climate in which the song was released. None of this is a particularly deep or complex analysis — it’s right there in the song.
