Something Charli XCX said in 2024 is going viral again, and no, it’s not “Guess the apple don’t fall far from the tree / ‘Cause I’ve been looking at you so long / Now I only see me.”
Last year, @warnermusicu shared a video of Charli explaining which bathroom she prefers in the clubs, and her response received a bit of backlash. “I actually avoid the girls bathroom in clubs,” she said. “I always just like sneak into the men’s because there’s no line and there’s no like drama.”
Adding that there’s no “annoying like, ‘He said that…” chatter, she explained that she’s the type to “get it done and get out.”
Well, the internet found the video slowly rising to the surface like a decomposing body in a backwoods lake, and now there’s a slew of new mixed reactions to Charli’s polarizing hot take. Here’s what they’re saying:
Some people didn’t agree with Charli’s reason for not using women’s bathroom’s in clubs. One person writing, “Crazy how women get labeled ‘drama’ for existing, but sneaking into the men’s bathroom is framed as quirky. The bar is underground.”
Another person said, “If you can’t even pee in the club without a woman snatching your weave, you’re living FOUL.”
Other people defended women’s bathrooms, suggesting it’s a place filled with positivity and good times. Someone wrote, “Weird because girl bathrooms are usually just drunken women complimenting each other. Honestly, a girls bathroom at a club is a good place to be.”
Another person said, “She’s missed out so much then. Girls bathroom is the best! Yes sometimes drama but hyping each other selfies & therapy sessions. Met girls only once and now seeing them having families on insta. Pure joy.”
This person said they “literally never seen drama at the women’s bathroom what is she talking about all i see is girls taking pics with friends or touching up their make up plsss.”
On the flip side, several people defended Charli’s take on which club bathrooms to use. “Acutally she’s an ally because y’all don’t know how many times the gay friend is alone while all the girls go to the bathroom together for 30 minutes.”
One person wrote, “I literally don’t get how her avoiding socializing is misogynsitic. Shes just saying she wants to be in and out and not stopped and pulled into whyatever convos going on (she’s a celeb!)”
And finally, this person made a great point, writing, “To be fair I feel like she didn’t really mean ‘drama’ she just meant she wants to go in, piss, and get out without a million people taking pics or talking ykwim?? Idk I’ve def been in the club bathroom where it’s more crowded than the d floor and the lines halfway out the club.”
I think all the club bathrooms are gross, overcrowded, and filled with some type of drama, so I’d rather run across the street and slip into a McDonald’s or buy a single pancake from Denny’s so they let me use their restrooms. Charli XCX does make a fair point, but she’s also been on my Spotify Wrapped for years, so I’m biased.
