My mom is an art nerd and always told me growing up that she got yelled at when she went to see “Starry Night” at the Museum of Modern Art because she was standing too close. It was cute to me that she was so enamored with a painting that she got in trouble with security. Fast-forward a few decades, and my mom and I visited the Museum of Modern Art, where I got to see “Starry Night” for myself. It was by far one of the most amazing things I’d ever seen.
I suddenly understood why people use abstract sayings about art, such as “the lines tell a story.” Each stroke was memorable, tortured, and beautiful. The more I looked at it, the more I felt like I learned about Vincent van Gogh as a person. It was so incredible, it was hard to look away. So hard that I instantly got drawn out of the moment when a security guard came up to me and went, “Miss,” and I realized I was leaning about two feet over the stanchion, trying to get a closer look.
