I Watched “The Blob” In 2025 And It Was Oddly Romantic

All My Thoughts While Watching “The Blob” In 2025

The Blob (1958) is one of the most iconic B-movies ever, so naturally I decided to watch it in 2025 to see how it holds up.

Here are all the thoughts I had while watching it.

2.

Wow, something about this guy (Steve McQueen) seems kind of sketchy. Maybe it’s something about the way Jane (NOT Janey girl) seems so suspicious of him, but I have the creeps. Maybe he’s The Blob.

3.

They’re seriously going to try to find a fallen star?

4.

This guy is sort of how I feel about the movie so far. Something’s off but I can’t put my finger on what.

5.

Okay, I do NOT like the squelchy sounds coming from this proto-Blob. RUN, unnamed creeped-out guy!

6.

I’m judging him for messing with the proto-Blob but honestly I probably would have done the same thing. If aliens showed up I’d probably just say, “TAKE ME.”

7.

This is actually pretty creepy and I’m feeling claustrophobic now.

8.

NOPE. Yeah I don’t want to look too hard at this.

9.

It REALLY doesn’t seem like a good idea to “go back out there” to the scene of where someone got covered in horrible slime, but I guess that’s what you call “Necessary For The Plot.”

10.

Jane should JUMP out of that car. I get the sense that all these people are going to have a very bad night.

11.

Not really sure why this whole police exposition part is coming in. Where is The Blob? Maybe my brain has been rotted from too many short-form videos, but I’m a bit bored. Anyway, Steve got off really easy here. I still don’t trust him.

12.

Are these really supposed to be high school kids? They definitely all look like they’re in their 30s.

13.

Cute dog. I REALLY hope he doesn’t get blob-ified. Also Jane is so me by wanting to take home a random dog she just found. She’s also giving big Dorothy from Wizard of Oz vibes here, or maybe it’s just the Trans-Atlantic accent.

14.

Kate is really doing the most here with her acting. Doc, meanwhile, is remarkably calm seeing as he just discovered that this mysterious blob ate an entire human man.

15.

Actually RIP Kate. What a performance. She had one chance to shine before being devoured by The Blob and she TOOK IT (along with all the electricity in the building, I guess?).

16.

Don’t go near The Blob, folks!! Run as fast as you can!

17.

When the cops start getting paranoid that all this is the work of some kids trying to make them look stupid, Jane claps back with the iconic line, “I think you’re doing that pretty well yourself, Sergeant.” So spicy, Jane. Especially given the fact that this was the 1950s. I actually like her, even though she’s barely given any real character depth.

18.

Wow this guy really hates his job. Too bad he’ll never be able to go get drunk in a cabin with the boys as planned, thanks to The Blob. Also, I kind of wish I knew more about The Blob honestly, or about Jane and Steve, instead of learning about all these characters only to watch them die in one minute.

19.

Now, at least, we’re learning that Jane lives at home and has a little brother. This kid’s accent is next level. Is it British? Trans-Atlantic? Irish? Unclear.

20.

The music is very romantic and whimsical here despite the fact that Steve is talking about watching Doc get swallowed by an alien blob.

21.

Wow, plot twist. There might be some actual romance here. Looks like I judged Steve too harshly. Maybe Jane was just using the good old “be mean to him” flirting tactic.

22.

“How do you get people to protect themselves from something they don’t believe in?” asks Steve here. Was The Blob a weirdly advanced climate change metaphor this whole time? Just kidding.

23.

Actually I’m much more creeped out by the demonic movie these guys are watching than this actual movie. It’s sort of weirdly sweet how not-scary this movie is.

24.

80 cents for a movie in the theater? Those must have been the days.

25.

25. Am I supposed to care about these cops or are they just here to show how inept law enforcement is?

26.

Honestly, the beginning of the movie was a little creepy with the whole flesh-eating blob thing, but most of this has just dragged so far. At least the group of friends came through.

28.

Don’t stand near the door, guys :/

29.

At least we know the little dog is safe! Also I really am not sure why they think the police would be able to handle this.

30.

Jim is the definition of letting his anxious thoughts and inner critic win. Nobody is thinking about you that much, Jim.

31.

This kid is fully, inexplicably British and I love it.

32.

I definitely saw a couple people laughing as they ran out of the theater. This would’ve been a fun one to be an extra in, I have to say.

33.

Danny, NO! Now is not the time to be a hero!

34.

Wow, I really love these graphics. Super beautiful especially for the era. This was an ambitious effort by the police but I’m not sure why they thought it would work if a gunshot did nothing to this blob.

35.

This is actually pretty nightmarish. Being stuck in a basement while the house above burns and a flesh-eating blob slips down the stairs? Nope.

36.

Wow, she loves him. I’m gonna go out on a limb and say this is actually more of a romance than a horror movie. I can see her visualizing their entire future in this frame.

37.

Finally, we know how to beat it!

38.

Wow, the last line was “as long as the Arctic stays cold…” Maybe I wasn’t wrong about the whole climate change metaphor thing.

39.

I personally would feel better if this thing was sent on a spaceship far away from the planet, but the Arctic is a good start.

40.

All in all,The Blob started off pretty strong and ended with a decently climactic ending. The middle really dragged, though, and I definitely wanted to quit at points. I was charmed by all the 1950s-era quirks, but never connected with the characters.

41.

Jane and Steve did have a pretty solid romance, though, and I think Jane was probably my favorite character. (The real hero, of course, was the little dog). I wish we learned more about The Blob and where it came from, but I guess it was more of a strong, silent type at the end of the day.

42.

Ultimately, I’m sure this movie was thrilling to some when it came out (I can only imagine how much fun it would have been to watch in a 1950s-era drive-in), but today it just felt a bit amorphous and empty… almost like, one might say, a blob.

43.

Context is important, though, and the movie is pretty impressive for how low-budget it was at the time — remember, this was the era when color was still a novelty on the big screen.

44.

Now I might actually have to rewatch the 1988 remake, as apparently in that version, The Blob is a bioweapon gone wrong. That version has been more heavily praised for its anti-government themes and character development, which this movie could have certainly worked on.

Have you seen The Blob? What do you think of it? Do you prefer the 1988 remake? Let me know in the comments!
