My friend who lives in Japan recently visited and brought me back some Kit Kats in flavors they don’t sell at most US stores. As a lover of Kit Kats, I had to write about trying them. I also went out to a Japanese supermarket in NYC and got a few more flavors to add to the taste test.
The six Kit Kat flavors I tried are matcha, cookies and cream, milk chocolate orange, strawberry, blueberry cheesecake, and gold. So without further ado, here’s what I thought of them!
1.
The first Kit Kat bar I tried was the matcha flavor, which had a green coating to match. Now, to be totally transparent, I’ve never had anything matcha in my life, so this was my introduction to it and…I liked it! I wasn’t sure what to expect, but the matcha coating tasted good, and it went SO well with the wafers. Finally, I understand the hype around matcha. The only nitpicky complaint I have is that it was just a tad too sweet for my preference, which left an aftertaste I didn’t love. But otherwise, it was pretty good! My rating for the matcha Kit Kats is 7/10.
2.
The second flavor I tried was the cookies and cream flavor. Like the matcha, the bar’s coating was cookies and cream, and the inside was the classic wafer. Also, like the matcha flavor, this was a little too sweet for my preferences, but overall, it was quite enjoyable! It tastes exactly like any cookies and cream ice cream, so if you like that, you’ll probably love these Kit Kat Bars. My rating for the cookies and cream Kit Kats is 7/10.
3.
The third bar I tried was the milk chocolate orange flavor. This was the flavor I was most curious to try and the one I was most skeptical about. I love oranges and I love chocolate, but oranges mixed with chocolate??? Doesn’t seem like a good match in my head. This bar has a milk chocolate coating, and then a little bit of tangy orange-flavored cream between the wafers. This was easily my least favorite Kit Kat flavor. When I tried it, I was immediately disgusted. The pungent taste of the orange flavor mixed with the milk chocolate was nearly repulsive. I literally took one bite, and I couldn’t take another. But who knows? This combo of flavors might be right up your alley! My rating for the milk chocolate orange Kit Kats is 1/10.
4.
The fourth bar I tried was the strawberry flavor. This was my second least favorite bar after the milk chocolate orange. The coating of this bar had the strawberry flavoring, and it was STRONG. I found these bars to be waaaaaaay too tart. My rating for the strawberry Kit Kats is 3/10.
5.
The fifth bar I tried was the blueberry cheesecake flavor, which had this cool, blue-and-white gradient coating. This bar was just okay to me. Some bites I took tasted more blueberry than cheesecake, and vice versa. I liked the rich taste of the cheesecake, but I hated the sharp taste of the blueberry. It didn’t complement the cheesecake to me. In fact, I found the blueberry flavor to taste more like some sort of blueberry hard candy rather than actual blueberries. My rating for the blueberry cheesecake Kit Kats is 5/10.
6.
Last, but certainly not least, was the Gold Kit Kat bar. The Gold Kit Kats are caramel-flavored white chocolate with a hint of milk chocolate. This was hands down my favorite flavor. Listen, I know chocolate and caramel are not a groundbreaking combination, but there’s a reason it works every time! The white chocolate, milk chocolate, and caramel perfectly complemented each other as well as the wafers. They were delicious, and I had to stop myself from eating the whole bag. My rating for the Gold Kit Kats is 9/10.
At the end of the day, these were just my opinions, and maybe you’d hate some the flavors I liked or love some of the flavors I hated. But if I had to recommend any of these Japanese flavors, I’d definitely push gold, matcha, and cookies and cream. I think many Kit Kat lovers would enjoy those flavors. And if there’s one flavor I’d say to avoid at all costs, it’s absolutely going to be milk chocolate orange!
