“Cosmetology school is NOT easy, and hairdressers do not just ‘play with hair all day.’ It involves a lot of chemistry, biology, color theory, and spatial visualization. Many people drop out because of this. Of those who do make it, only about 1 in 20 will survive past a year of salon work. This is usually due to burnout, a toxic work environment, social media pressure, and/or rude and unappreciative clients. Be kind to the people who do your hair, and tip them well; it is skilled labor. However, most cosmetology programs only teach how to work with straight — or barely textured — hair, because that is all you are required to know to pass the state board.”

Some schools are fortunate enough to have someone experienced with textured hair to lecture on the topic, but it is not an absolute requirement.
