Culture Buffs, National Monument The House Of Tan Yeok Nee Is Now Open For Visits

After a meticulous multi-year restoration, the House of Tan Yeok Nee, Singapore’s last remaining traditional Teochew mansion and a gazetted National Monument — officially reopened its doors. Once the private residence of Teochew merchant Tan Yeok Nee, the National Monument has been carefully restored, and for the first time in more than 140 years, will reopen in its renewed form as a cultural and heritage destination, welcoming the public to experience its architecture, heritage, and reimagined role in contemporary Singapore.

A little bit of history: Having acquired the property in 2022, the Karim Family Foundation has since been planning for and leading its renewal. Restoration works commenced in 2024, guided by historical records and conservation principles that honour the authenticity of the house. With a deep commitment to cultural conservation and community building, the family has worked to preserve the mansion’s architectural integrity while creating an immersive experience that blends its historical legacy with modern sensibilities. With a focus on honouring Singapore’s early immigrant settlers and celebrating the heritage of the Teochew community, the House is reintroduced as a vibrant hub for cultural discovery, experiential gastronomy, and shared memories.
