The 24-year-old singer does not shy away from an opportunity to speak her mind politically, and her acceptance speech was certainly no exception. Donning a white “ICE OUT” pin, she began, “I don’t feel like I need to say anything but that no one is illegal on stolen land.”
“It’s just really hard to know what to say and do right now…” she continued, following backlash she received earlier this week for posting an Instagram story urging other celebrities to speak out politically. “I feel really hopeful in this room, and I feel like we just need to keep fighting and speaking up and protesting. Our voices really do matter and the people matter.”
The Grammy winner was then seen mouthing “Fuck ICE,” which was bleeped out during the broadcast.
This isn’t the first time Billie has used a speech to urge people into action, either. This past October, while accepting her WSJ Innovator Award, she urged the billionaires in the room to “give their money away. “Love you all, but there’s a few people in here that have a lot more money than me. If you’re a billionaire, why are you a billionaire?” she said.
