Ashton Kutcher is sharing an unfortunate experience where he says he was fired from a job just because of his weight.
The revelation came during an interview with Entertainment Tonight, where Ashton promoted his new FX/Hulu series The Beauty — a horror about a beauty-enhancing drug with terrible side effects. When asked whether there was ever a time in his life when he pursued “an idea of perfection” that now makes him “sad,” Ashton referenced his modeling career, which began when he was 19.
“I started modeling when I was, like, 19, and I was hanging out with what I consider to be some of the most beautiful people in the world,” he said. “And what I realized really quickly is, everybody had an insecurity.”
Ashton, 47, went on to share one experience in which his body type led to his being fired from a Gucci modeling job.
He said he had booked an “exclusive campaign for Gucci when Tom Ford was running it,” flew to Italy for a show, and found himself in a pink Speedo.
“I was 178 pounds,” he said. “I know exactly how much I weighed – 178 pounds.”
“[Tom] was like, ‘He’s too fat,’ and I got fired,” the actor recalled.
But Ashton defended the designer, saying that Tom had “a specific thing he wanted to see” and that they now laugh about the incident.
“He’s like, ‘You were too fat.’ I was like, dude, I was 178 pounds, what are you talking about?” Ashton laughed. “But, he had a specific thing he wanted to see that in his eye was the right thing. It didn’t mean I was less, it just meant that I wasn’t that for him, for that moment.”
Ashton added, “You can build insecurities about those things over time, and I think everybody has those. It really does not matter who you are. Everybody’s got an insecurity.”
BuzzFeed has contacted reps for Tom for comment.
