The Puerto Rican artist is set to perform at next week’s Super Bowl, along with an opening from Green Day, which prompted a huge backlash from the MAGA crowd. President Donald Trump even said of the performers this week, “I’m anti-them. I think it’s a terrible choice. All it does is sow hatred. Terrible.”
Tonight, Benito won the Grammy for Best Música Urbana Album. He began his acceptance speech by saying, “Before I say thanks to god, I’m gonna say ICE out.” This prompted a huge standing ovation from the crowd.
“We’re not savage. We’re not animals. We’re not aliens. We are humans, and we are Americans,” he continued, possibly alluding to the MAGA crowd who tried insisting that he is not American.
“Also, I want to say to the people: I know it’s tough not to hate on these days, and I was thinking sometimes we get contaminamos. I don’t know how to say that in English,” he continued. “The hate gets more powerful with more hate. The only thing that’s more powerful than hate is love, so, please, we need to be different. If we fight, we have to do it with love. We don’t hate them, we love our people, and we love our family. And that’s the way to do it, with love. Don’t forget that, please.”
Bad Bunny is also up for more awards tonight — including Album of the Year and Record of the Year — so keep an eye on this space.
