Betty, with her upbeat personality and her TV background, enjoyed breaking character and doing publicity. While Bea, with her more serious personality and theater background, preferred to stick to the script and shun the spotlight. 

Though by some accounts, it does seem like they did eventually become friends or at least friendly during the run. According to Bea’s son, Matthew Saks, the two would sometimes take turns driving into work together.
