“I have always been the black sheep of my family. Several cousins, aunts, typical large family. BUT I have always been my grandmother’s RIDE OR DIE favorite, and she has never been shy about letting the rest of the family know it. One Thanksgiving in the early ’90s, all the cousins were hanging out in the game room, including my mean cousin, who was forever in competition mode with me and pretending to be my friend. Well, my Nona, God bless her, was wine trashed, and she just walked right into the sliding glass door, and man, everyone FROZE, and I jumped up into panic mode, like, ‘ARE YOU OKAY?!'”
“She looks directly at her wine glass and goes, ‘OH THANK GOD! Not one drop!’ And starts laughing hysterically. So I START laughing, as do the rest of my cousins, minus the competitive cousin.
She starts SCREAMING in my face about disrespecting our Grandma, but EVERYONE was laughing? Fast forward, lots of yelling, and my Nona told my cousin to shut up. My cousin body checked me. Hard. So I picked up the first thing I saw. It just so happened to be the Christmas tree, complete with ornaments, lights, and a stand, and BEAT THE SHIT OUT OF HER with it.
My grandma gave me a huge hug afterward and said, ‘This is why.’ I figure it meant why I was her favorite.”
