Look, I know we’re not really supposed to care what other people think about us. But if you’re anything like me, it’s kinda hard not to worry about being judged for stuff, at least a little bit! So when I saw someone pose the question over on Reddit recently, “What do you quietly and secretly judge other people for?” I absolutely HAD to know what I might be doing to draw the ire of others. Fortunately, these 27 responses have me feeling slightly less self-conscious:

“Not putting away their shopping carts. This one always irritates me, but I don’t want to cause a scene, especially when I’m in my car looking for parking while it’s happening. If I’m nearby, I’ll put their cart away. I’ll definitely rant about that person even more in my head.”

“Using high beam headlights on any road except a rural one out in the sticks.”

“When I’m in public restrooms, I lowkey listen to if people wash their hands, and if they do, for how long. Probably weird, but I like to judge, I guess.”

“How they treat animals, the environment, strangers, and themselves.”

“Emotional immaturity. I’m sorry, but I really can’t take you seriously when you are a 40-year-old with the emotional capacity of a 12-year-old. Go get some therapy, please.”

“People who bag their dog poop on a trail, then leave the bag behind on the same trail.”

“How unaware they are of what is going on around them. They walk backwards and in all directions without looking around. Leave their shopping cart in the middle of an aisle. Walk into a store and suddenly stop, blocking the entrance. Drive into the middle of an enter/exit driveway, so you can’t get in.”

“Having worked in the service industry since I was a kid, it’s how you treat the people serving you. It could be a waitress, a bartender, a kid stocking shelves in the market, or just people in general. When you treat people who may be in a lower financial or career status as below you, you’re dead in my eyes. Golden rule. Treat everyone with respect and try to put yourself in their shoes for a minute. You don’t even have to walk a mile.”

“When they talk about work outside of work too much.”

“Having a monoculture lawn at this point. There’s no need for it; it’s not functional for anything that other, more sustainable, and less expensive yards can provide. And honestly, they’re ugly. The amount of work and pesticides that go into them is disgusting.”

“Grammar, spelling, and punctuation. And I consider the Oxford comma optional; the nuns I had in elementary school were opposed to it and marked it wrong.”

“Gossiping about people in their own circle. It’s quite amusing. They will hug them several times, pose for pictures, then, as soon as they leave, the ‘friend’ is now the topic of back-biting gossip. Just know, junior high was likely a long time ago, and I judge them hard for being so vapid.”

“How someone talks to their little children while in public. It’s wild to me how some people can cuss at a 3-year-old and not feel bad about it.”

“Bad table manners. My sister-in-law and my niece both have terrible table manners. They both smack their food with their mouths open. My mother taught us very strict table manners: sit up straight, napkin in lap, no elbows, and above all, mouth closed. I can’t believe my brother married someone like that. I guess he doesn’t notice, but I’d have hoped he’d have tried teaching his daughter.”

“Airing drama (either directly or passive-aggressively) through social media posts. Nothing lowers my opinion of a person like seeing them post ‘Wish some people would mind their own business about Chad,’ or ‘Once again my baby daddy didn’t show up for visitation.’ Honey, I am not your sister. I just wanted to see pictures of the kids.”

“Letting their cats outside. Outside cats can die in some pretty gnarly ways. Why would you risk that?”

“Paying someone to do a job they could easily do themselves. My husband and I DIY pretty much everything. Sometimes people will tell me they had a person come fix/build/paint whatever thing on their house. It’s always some tiny, easy job.”

“Not zippering in a merge lane. Especially people who drive in the middle and force those behind into one lane. They’re just slowing everyone down.”

“I quietly judge people who brag about doing things like skipping school, shoplifting, or taking something that isn’t theirs just because someone else made a mistake. And I’m especially bothered by people who openly take advantage of systems simply because they can. That kind of casual dishonesty and lack of integrity is such a turn-off to me.”

And finally, “How well-kept their dog’s nails are.”
