“My mom entered every contest she could when we were little. We were dirt poor growing up, so it was really like a side hustle for her, and that’s how we got many essential household items. She even bought mailing labels to make it easier to fill out the little raffle slips. We won all kinds of things: new bikes from the sheriff’s office, a home security system from the county, and free eye exams from a health fair. But my favorite was from the local 4-H fair when I was around 16. They had a bunch of ‘door prizes’ that were super nice. The first 100 people or so got a little ticket and could enter for a fancy wine-and-cheese basket, a top-of-the-line vacuum cleaner, or a golf bag and membership to the local green. My mom REALLY wanted that vacuum cleaner. So we all put our tickets in for the vacuum.”

“A few days later, she gets a call letting her know she won something. She was overjoyed and even threw out our old vacuum. I go with her to pick up from the county office, and we find out she did NOT win a vacuum. She won a cat from the humane society next door. Everyone won a cat. 100 people won a free cat from the Humane Society. She was SO disgruntled, but had never failed to redeem a prize, and she wanted the BEST cat, so we hastened over to the humane society. And that’s how we got our family’s first cat, Cat. He was the best thing that ever happened to her. Even better than that vacuum she wanted.”
