“My ex and I were together for over 3 years. During this time, he graduated with his Bachelor’s degree and started working as a teacher, which was his chosen career path. I was working towards my MBA and also experienced significant career growth, which had me traveling a lot for work. We’d already had many conversations about the fact that my chosen career path and his were drastically different, especially in terms of salary potential, but that it didn’t matter to me as long as we were both committed to the relationship and to contributing equally financially percentage-wise. He said he agreed but didn’t want to talk about it because it made him uncomfortable.”
“During a company-wide conference in Vegas, I was given notice of a major promotion and was very excited to celebrate when I got home. My friends and I went out together to celebrate, and my ex showed up, pulled me aside, and said, ‘I can’t celebrate you because your promotion makes me feel like a failure.’ He then said that it made him feel like less of a man because my salary would be about double his. He asked me to not take the promotion and to stay in my current role. I told him absolutely not, and I asked him to leave.
The next day, he came to my house and told me he was mad at me for asking him to leave. I had already packed up his stuff and told him that I needed a supportive partner who would celebrate my success with me and not try to bring me down because of his own insecurities. I ended things right there and started in my new position a few days later. Through that position, I met my now husband, who is the most supportive partner I could have ever dreamed of. Morale of the story: don’t shrink yourself to make your partner feel big.”
