“Watching my mom when she found out her mother died. I was around five years old when my grandma got sick with breast cancer. As the months went on, my grandma started losing weight, losing her hair, and losing her spark. My mom is a very strong but emotionless woman. Don’t get me wrong, she is polite and will joke around with people, but she does not show her sadness often. Anyways, at around 2 am, the phone rang. At first, there was an odd silence in the air. She picked up the phone and, with an already shaking voice, said, “Hello?” Not five seconds later I heard her begin to hyperventilate. I could hear her put her hand over her mouth and start rummaging around in the sheets.”
“I opened my eyes, and what I saw was heartbreaking. Here was my mother, who is normally a strong and emotionless woman, sobbing into her hands. The next thing I saw was my mom throw herself into my dad’s arms. Dad explained to me and my brother that our grandma had died. I remember feeling very numb in that moment. I was upset about my grandma, but oddly enough, I couldn’t get my mom out of my mind. The fact that she was out somewhere, upset, sad, and maybe even scared… terrified me. With all of the positives and negatives that have happened in my life, I have never forgotten seeing my mom so vulnerable that night.”
