“The World’s End. At 19-years-old when it came out, it didn’t click for me. I couldn’t work out why as an enormous and longtime fan of the previous two films and of the boys as people in general, I didn’t love it quite like I expected to. It was funny and well-written but I walked away from it feeling weirdly underwhelmed for reasons I couldn’t put my finger on. At 32, seeing it again for the first time in years, it was an incredible shift. It’s now one of my favourite films of all time and I think Gary King is the best character they’ve ever written. I can see now why it’s the one they’re proudest of making. As a teenager, I just wasn’t ready for it.”
“I didn’t realize it at the time, but I was essentially going through a midlife crisis when I watched The World’s End. I was wondering what I was doing with my life, missing the glory days, and all that optimism of my youth.
So it’s good to see someone else getting it. It’s kind of the forgotten Edgar Wright movie but it’s so powerful. The script is great, has some great moments of tension, and the fights are great.
I watched it again recently and still love it, but I can see why those not going through that crisis would think Gary King is annoying.”
“The movie wasn’t really aimed at 19-year-olds. Simon grew up.”
