“Over 40 years ago, I got a job at a newly opened bargain store. The owner who was training all of us new hires was an a-hole.”
“We were walking around the store and furiously taking notes as he pointed things out and snapping out questions. He had no patience when someone didn’t have the answer right off the top of their head. A couple of hours in, he asked a woman next to me a question, and she froze, stared at him, and didn’t say a word. I could see her holding back tears. The owner went off about how no one could remember anything, how he was wasting his time, etc, and the tears started spilling out of her eyes.
I told him, ‘Look, we are all taking notes, we don’t have instant memory.’ I turned to the woman and said I was leaving and offered her a ride home. We both walked out at the same time.
I got a call from the owner about a week later. He asked why I didn’t show up for my shift. I said, ‘Don’t you remember me? I’m the one who walked out on the first day.’ He said he did remember me, just thought I liked feisty women, and expected that I would come back. Nope.”
